The McNair Scholars Program is a U.S. Department of Education Federal TRIO Program. The program is named in honor of astronaut Ronald E. McNair, who died in the 1986 Challenger Space Shuttle explosion. The McNair Program at USC continues operating under the following name: Research Gateway Scholars Program. McNair Scholars is funded at 151 institutions across the United States and Puerto Rico by the U.S. Department of Education. It is designed to prepare undergraduate students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities.
